Wildcats Come From Behind to Complete Perfect Road Trip

The Moncton Wildcats used a strong third period to come from behind a grab a shootout victory over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens Saturday afternoon at the Centre Georges-Vezina. The win gave the Wildcats a perfect 3-0 record on their three game Quebec road trip. Alex Saulnier and Marek Hrivik each scored two goals for the Cats. The Sagueneens got goals from Guillaume Asselin, Steve Label, Rock Regmbaid and Charles Hudon. Shane Owen making his first start since returning from the New Jersey Devils training camp stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced for the win. Robin Gasse recorded the loss for Chicoutimi stopping 25 of 29 shots.

Chicoutimi dictated the play from the opening face off and drew first blood 3:41 into the game when Steve Label recorded his first goal of the season. Guillaume Asselin double the Sagueneens lead to two at 8:49 scoring on the powerplay. The cats got a powerplay goal themselves at 13:29 when Alex Saulnier was able to find the back of the net. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period but neither team could beat either goalie. Chicoutimi who lead 11-8 in shots in the first period took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Alex Saulnier was able to notch his second of the game 4:33 into the 2nd period to get the Cats back on level terms. However, the Sagueneens were able to regain the lead five minutes later when Rock Regmbaird scored on a Chicoutimi powerplay. With just under three minutes left in the frame Charles Hudon was able to put Chicoutimi up 4-2. Chicoutimi had a 14-10 shot advantage in the second period.

The Wildcats were able to get back on level terms early in the third period thanks to two goals from Marek Hrivik. Hrivik got his first of the period at 5:54 and two minutes later tied the game at four when he was able to score on a Wildcat powerplay. There was no more scoring in the period, the cats held a 9-5 shot advantage as the teams headed for overtime. Overtime was also scoreless, setting the stage for the shootout. Wildcats held a 2-0 shot advantage in the extra frame.

In the shootout Daniel Pettersson and Alex Saulnier both scored for the Wildcats and Shane Owen stopped 2 of 3 Chicoutimi shooters to seal the victory. Moncton was a perfect 2 for 2 on the powerplay while Chicoutimi capitalized on two of their three opportunities on the man advantage.

Wildcats are back in action Wednesday September 29 when they return to the Moncton Coliseum to face the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Game time is at 7:00pm.
