Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things took on the Lake Erie Crushers in the first game of a three-game series on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, and with the help of center fielder Danny Poma's ninth-inning three-run homer, the Wild Things were able to come out victorious by a final score of 5-2. Matt Purnell earned the win, while Trevor Longfellow suffered the loss.

Washington got out to an early lead thanks to the hot bats of second baseman Matt Ford and right fielder Scott Kalamar. Ford started the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to help the Wild Things jump out to a 1-0 lead. The following at-bat, designated hitter CJ Beatty ripped a triple down the first base line and then scored on an RBI single from Kalamar.

In the later innings, it was the Crushers turn to score when right fielder Ty Nelson scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to bring Lake Erie within one run. In the eighth inning, Nelson hit a single that tied the game at two runs each.

The game was knotted going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but walks from designated hitter David Popkins and catcher John Fidanza set the stage for Poma's late-inning heroics.
