SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, rode the arm of Scotty Ward to a 3-1 win over the Frontier Greys in the opener of a series on Tuesday night.
Ward, making his first professional start, retired the first 12 hitters of the game before Scott Carcaise singled in the fifth. The Boomers nabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the third. Three consecutive singles from Cam Sherrer, Jordan Dean, and Craig Massey opened the inning. Two runs scored on a throwing error. Kyle Ruchim added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Alexi Colon, who led off the frame with a triple. Ward worked seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Clark Labitan nailed down the win with a perfect ninth for his third save of the season. Dean picked up a pair of hits in the game, the third inning single marked the 200th of his Schaumburg tenure. Massey and Sherrer also added two hits as the Boomers finished with 10.
Schaumburg (17-23) continues the six-game homestand on Wednesday night with the middle contest against the Frontier Greys at 6:30 p.m. RHP Brett Mabry (2-2, 3.92) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Justin D'Alessandro (2-4, 2.63).
