Washington Wild Things News Release
The days of sluggish offense for the Washington Wild Things are long gone. With 17 hit, nine walks, and five Richmond errors, the Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, defeat the Richmond Roosters 16-9.
The victory moved the Wild Things to 3-2 on the season and dropped the Roosters to 1-4. Washington got on the board in the second inning and took a 2-0 lead after L.J. Biernbaum, Bill Greenwell, Brian Stoecklein, and Jon Cahill all singled. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the third when the Wild Things sent 12 batters to the plate and put seven runs on the board.
Richmond got four runs back in the fourth and one in the fifth. But the Wild Things answered back quickly using RBIs from Greenwell and Biernbaum in the fifth inning. Four Wild Things crossed the plate in that inning to put the game out of reach, 15-5. Washington scored one more in the eighth, and Richmond scored four in the ninth.
Washington was led by Stoecklein who went 3-4 and added three RBI. Bill Greenwell added two hits, two RBI and scored three times. Eleven of Washington's 10 batters had hits, eight Wild Things scored at least once, and nine batters collected an RBI.
Matt Powell earned the victory for Washington despite giving up five runs in five innings of work. For Richmond, Chris Spigner, last year's Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and nine runs.
The series finale is tomorrow night, and the first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are still available.
