ROCKFORD, Ill. – Justin Dowdy came within a strikeout of breaking the team record in the Rockford RiverHawks' 8-2 win over the Springfield/Ozark Ducks on Wednesday at Marinelli Field.

Dowdy struck out 15 – one short of the team record of 16 set by Jason Shelley against Canton on July 22, 2002 – in six innings. Dowdy (2-0) scattered two runs on four hits for the win. After Brian Kirby led off the second with a home run that tied the game at 2-2, Dowdy struck out seven of the next eight, including a strikeout of the side in the third.

Aaron McEachran hit a two-run homer off Springfield starter Luis Villareal in the first inning. The RiverHawks went ahead for good with a five-run fourth inning. Rich Austin led off the fourth with a single and scored the go-ahead run on an error by shortstop Dave Munoz. Villareal (0-1) gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

The RiverHawks go for a sweep of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. It's the first Dollar Beer Night, sponsored by Miller Lite.

All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 – the Hub and at the team website. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 12th season.
