Washington Wild Things News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - In the second game in a row that required extra innings, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, won the first series of the season by taking down the Evansville Otters in ten innings, 3-2.
The Wild Things took a 1-0 in a very interesting way in the top of the second inning. Otters starting pitcher Garrett Bullock struck out four Washington batters, but only three counted towards outs, which is incredibly rare in baseball. Washington first baseman Doug Thennis was the first batter to strike out, but courtesy of a dropped third strike by Otters catcher Brett Chamberlain, Thennis advanced to first base. The Wild Things then loaded the bases and Thennis scored after catcher Chris Anderson was walked.
Washington added another run in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. First baseman Trevor Pippin reached first on a fielder's choice and by doing so, he drove in second baseman Shain Stoner. Pippin went 2-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.
Evansville responded and scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 2-1 game. A single by second baseman Frank Martinez brought center fielder Michael Sheely into home. The Otters tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by left fielder Alex Foltz.
Washington scored the only run in the tenth inning. With two outs in the top of the inning, Pippin hit the Wild Things' first home run of the season over the right field wall to take a 3-2 lead. Newly-signed reliever Nathan Striz struck out two of the Otters' three batters in the bottom of the tenth to seal the team's victory.
Wild Things starting pitcher Chris Smith spent 6 2/3 innings on the mound. He allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits. Smith walked four batters and struck out three. Striz pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and allowed no hits or runs while striking out three batters.
Otters starter Bullock lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits. He allowed four walks and struck out ten batters. Reliever Tyree Hayes pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run (earned) on two hits. Hayes struck out seven batters and walked one.
The Wild Things return home for their home opener on Tuesday, May 22nd. It is Legends Week at CONSOL Energy Park, so don't miss out! All games start at 7:05 p.m. and there will be special post-game fireworks displays on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday!
