Rockford RiverHawks News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - When it rained, it poured.
The Rockford RiverHawks sat through a 1 hour, 50 minute thunderstorm delay Sunday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. After the storm moved on, the River City Rascals scored nine times and cruised to a 12-5 win.
Eric Williams, Jason Patton, Curran Redal and Matt Cerna each had two hits Sunday for the Rascals, who won two of three games in the season-opening series.
The Rascals scored twice in the second inning to break a scoreless tie. Nick Sarianides walked the first two hitters of the inning and both scored, one on a Curran Redal single to right field and the other on an error by Rockford first baseman Evan Button.
In the fourth inning, Sarianides (0-1) gave up three straight one-out hits to right, including Eric Williams' RBI single. After a strikeout of Jeremy Synan, Sarianides had Charlie Lisk behind in the count, 0-2, when a thunderstorm rolled in and forced the teams off the field for nearly two hours. Jordan Stern came on to face Lisk, the Frontier League's all-time home-run king. Lisk grounded to shortstop Daniel Gonzalez, whose wild throw brought in two runs. Lisk scored on a single by Gerardo Avila.
The Rascals added four runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
In the ninth inning, the RiverHawks rallied for four runs on six hits, including RBI singles by rookies Elliot Hagburg and Carlos Luciano.
The RiverHawks are off on Monday. They open a three-game series at 6:05 p.m. CDT Tuesday at Florence.
The RiverHawks' home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday against Lake Erie. The Power Connection sponsors a postgame fireworks extravaganza.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast on WNTA-FM (100.5) Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
