Wild Things Sweep Four-Game Series
August 2, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, broke out the bats and the brooms, crushing the Richmond Roosters, 16-1, to sweep the four-game series.
Matt Powell dominated, pitching a complete game while giving up six hits and striking out seven. Powell (7-1) now leads the Wild Things in wins.
Richmond starter Bobby Graves (0-7) failed to make it out of the first, giving up four runs and four hits in 2/3 innings.
Washington (43-23) pounded Richmond pitching, batting around twice and hitting a season-high four home runs. Jay Coakley hit two home runs while Bill Greenwell and Brian Stoecklein each homered once. Mike Arbinger reached base six times, going 4 for 4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Stoecklein came to the plate in the eighth needing a single for the cycle, but walked. Washington has never had a player hit for the cycle in its three year history.
Powell also had dazzling defense behind him. Third baseman Chad Kinyon made three spectacular plays ranging to his right to throw out Richmond batters.
With the victory, Washington leads the East Division by four-and-a-half games over Kalamazoo and Evansville. The Wild Things have their final off-day of the year tomorrow and then travel to Windy City to begin a three-game series on Wednesday.
