Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, signed two pitchers to their 2013 roster.

RHP Cole Brand comes to Washington after spending three seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals system. Drafted in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft, Brand split time between the GCL Cardinals and the Johnson City Cardinals in 2012. Brand, a native of Cleveland, TN, had an ERA of 2.97 and 22 strikeouts in 30.1 innings in 2012. "Cole showed a lot of promise in his time with the Cardinals organization and we're looking forward to seeing what he can do in Washington," said Wild Thing's Assistant General Manager Steven Zavacky.

LHP Matt Phillips, from Orcutt, CA, was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and pitched 12 games for the GCL Red Sox that year. In those 12 games Phillips was 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Phillips took the 2011 season off to recover from injury and, after a brief stint with the Abilene Prairie Dogs of the North American League, spent 2012 preparing for a comeback in 2013. Zavacky said, "Matt has spent the better part of the past two years getting himself back into baseball shape, and our scouts tell us that he is now 100% and throwing in the low 90s. Based upon these recommendations, as a staff, we felt that we needed to give Matt a chance to contribute to our club."

Wild Things' Bench Coach Bart Zeller added, "[Phillips] comes highly recommended from the Red Sox organization and has been a strikeout pitcher in both college and in his year in the Gulf Coast Rookie League."

The Wild Things will open the 2013 season on the road with trips to Schaumburg and Rockford, then return home to CONSOL Energy Park to host the Southern Illinois Miners May 24-26. Deposits for 2013 group outings are now being accepted; contact the box office at 724-250-9555 to book your outing today. For further information, log onto www.washingtonwildthings.com .
