Schaumburg Boomers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers Baseball Club is proud to stand wing-to-wing with unjustly persecuted members of their flock and voice their support for Mary Green and Matt Scallon, who will request a variance from the Arlington Heights Village Board Tuesday night to allow them to keep chickens as pets.
"To vote against this request would be fowl in more ways than one," said Andy Viano, Boomers President & General Manager. "As proud owners of a newborn chicken ourselves who has spent the last year bringing smiles to the faces of people young and old throughout Chicagoland, it's become clear that any board members who vote against this variance will be left with egg on their face."
Named after the male greater prairie chicken, the Schaumburg Boomers foundational tenants of community-focused, family-friendly and affordable entertainment stand second only behind their unwavering commitment to chicken rights. Hatched in February 2012, Boomers mascot Coop the Boomer is a fixture throughout the community, and recently completed a holiday season that saw him collect donations for the Salvation Army and deliver gifts to children in local hospitals.
"To see all the work Coop has done be ignored simply because he and these hens are birds of a different feather is an outrage," Viano said. "That said, we think all the squawking from opponents to this variance will fall on deaf ears."
If the hens are allowed to occupy the yards of Ms. Green and Mr. Scallon, the Boomers have confirmed both the families and their clucking companions will be invited guests of honor to the club's Prairie Chicken Appreciation Day in August 2013, with the chickens granted honorary prairie chicken status in a pregame ceremony.
When reached for comment, Coop the Boomer said only his "feathers were ruffled" by the entire ordeal.
