Wild Things Re-Sign Pitcher
February 23, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced Pittsburgh native Jim Popp will return to the Wild Things' roster for 2006.
Popp was originally chosen in the 48th round by the Colorado Rockies in the 2002 June draft after his junior season at Duquesne University. The right-handed pitcher was selected again in the 2003 draft by the San Francisco Giants in the 50th round.
Popp tied for team lead in wins with a 6-4 record and a 4.89 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched his senior year at Duquesne. As a junior he led the Dukes in ERA. He struck out 34 batters and pitched four complete games in nine starts.
The Brashear High School graduate joined the Wild Things in 2004 when he finished the season with a 5-1 record and a 1.40 ERA. He completed the 2005 season with a 4-4 record, a 2.98 ERA, and a team-high 17 saves in 57.1 innings pitched.
According to field manager John Massarelli, "Popp is the most dominant reliever in the entire Frontier League the last two seasons, and he will continue in that same role. Major league organizations need to give Jimmy an opportunity at the next level."
The Washington Wild Things open their 2006 season in Chillicothe on May 24th. The home opener is scheduled for May 27th when the league's newest team, the Traverse City Beach Bums will travel to Falconi Field. Season and group packages are available at the Falconi Field box office.
