Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, broke out the brooms Saturday night at Falconi Field. Washington survived a late charge by Florence to earn a 3-2 victory and a three-game series sweep over the Freedom.

The victory moves the Wild Things (8-7) over .500 for the first time since the first game of the season and closer to Frontier League East Division leading Evansville (9-5), which started the day two games ahead of Washington.

Scoring early has been the key to Washington's success this season, and Saturday was no different. Jay Coakley put the Wild Things on the scoreboard by driving in Jack Headley with an RBI double. Coakley then scored from second on an error by Florence's first baseman.

Headley scored again in the third inning when Mike Arbinger hit a sacrifice fly. That run put the Wild Things up 3-1, and got back the run Florence scored in the top of the inning.

Washington starter Matt Powell cruised through 6 2/3 innings, giving up just three hits and one run before handing the ball to B.J. Borsa, who had not yet given up a run in 9 1/3 innings this season.

However, Florence's Justin Rahschulte drew a two-out walk. Then J.D. Foust, who entered the day hitting .432, hit an RBI double to right-center field, cutting the Washington lead to 3-2. But the next batter popped up behind first base and Washington second baseman, Brian Stoecklein sealed the victory with a diving catch. The save was Borsa's third of the season.

Also, the Wild Things traded pitcher Doug Heagen and a second-round pick in next year's draft for Richmond's 2004 first-round pick. The trade gives the Wild Things four first-round picks in next year's draft.

The Wild Things will travel to Evansville to take on the first-place Otters tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
