ROCKFORD, Ill. â Frank James pitched seven shutout innings, but the Rockford RiverHawks had to survive a ninth-inning Mid-Missouri rally to hold on for a 4-1 win Friday in front of 4,362 at Marinelli Field. Rockford has won four in a row and ensured at least a one-game lead in the Frontier League West.
Rockford led from the first inning on. Dan Floyd doubled off starter and loser John Picco in the first and scored on Aaron McEachran's groundout. Kevin Ciarrachi singled in a run in the second. Picco (0-1) lasted 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs in his Frontier League debut.
James (2-1) scattered five hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.
The Mavericks rallied against reliever Jesen Merle in the ninth inning with three straight hits. Nick Saunders doubled in a run to break the shutout and closer Josh Latimer entered with two men in scoring position, nobody out and the potential tying run at the plate. Latimer retired three in a row for his third save.
The RiverHawks go for the sweep of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday on Umbrella Night, sponsored by Axberg Heating and Continental Coupons.
