
Wild Things Defeat Rockford, 5-2, on Strong Outing by Groh

Washington, Pa.- The Washington Wild Things (37-42), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, defeated the Rockford RiverHawks (40-39) 5-2 on Wednesday night thanks to a five-run first inning and excellent pitching from starter Zach Groh.
The Wild Things scored all of their runs in the first, pounding Rockford's starting pitcher Fabian Gomez with five hits, including four for extra bases. Michael Parker led off with a double and scored on a single by Grant Psomas. Ryan Groth then tripled to drive in Psomas and scored on a Matt Sutton double. After Alan Robbins walked, Chris Raniere drove in Sutton and Robbins with the third double of the inning.
Rockford got on the board in the third inning, when Jono Brooks hit a triple and then scored on a ground out by Matt Mazurek. The RiverHawks added another run in the top of the ninth on a solo homerun by Derrick Walker.
Groh pitched strong to earn the win. In eight innings, he struck out 11 batters, including all three he faced in the fifth. He gave up one run and four hits, hit a batter and did not walk anyone.
Gomez received the loss for the RiverHawks, pitching one inning and allowing five runs on five hits, a walk and a strikeout. Jose Mateo threw well in relief for Rockford, giving up only one hit and two walks in five innings.
