Washington Batters \'Hawks Early in 5-2 Win

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things scored five times in the first inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-2, on Wednesday.
Washington batted around in the first to knock Rockford starter Fabian Gomez (4-3) out of the game. Mike Parker led off with a double just inside the bag at third base. With one out, Grant Psomas singled home Parker. The Wild Things scored four two-out runs, on a triple by Ryan Groth, a double by Matt Sutton and a two-run double by Chris Raniere.
Washington starter Zach Groh (5-3) scattered a run on four hits over eight innings for the win. Groh struck out 11 without a walk. He struck out the side in the fifth inning. Groh escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the first inning and the RiverHawks also left a man in scoring position in the sixth.
The RiverHawks got on the board in the third inning when Jono Brooks hit a leadoff triple and scored on Matt Mazurek's groundout. Derrick Walker hit a two-out home run to left field in the ninth.
The RiverHawks' three-game winning streak ended.
The rubber match of the three-game series is at 6:05 p.m. CDT Thursday.
The RiverHawks come home Aug. 25 for a six-game homestand. They play River City at 7:05 p.m. on a Two-For Tuesday. Tickets and hot dogs are each 2-for-1.
