Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA -- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, battled back to beat the Richmond Roosters Saturday at Falconi Field 7-4 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,738.

Jason Elkins pitched 4 2/3 innings of perfect relief and Zack Cates hit the first pitch he saw from Rooster reliever Justin Smetana over the right center field fence as the Wild Things scored seven unanswered runs to rally for the win. Elkins relieved an ineffective Jason Howton-who only pitched 3 1/3 innings. The Roosters were held hitless by Elkins and Kozol for the final 5 2/3 innings. Elkins was untouchable and kept Washington in the game. Anthony Kozol pitched a hitless ninth inning for his eighth save.

Richmond batted around in the first inning against Howton. Howton allowed three runs in the first-as Richmond capitalized on his ineffective pitching and a Wild Things error.

Richmond scored their last run in the third. After Matt Butler tripled, Dave Leverett drove him in with an RBI groundout.

Rooster all-star pitcher Chris Spigner was pitching a perfect game through four innings. Zack Cates broke up Spigner's bid for a perfect game with a bunt single in the fifth inning to start a four run Wild Things rally. Orlando Cruz broke out of a slump with a single to make the score 4-3. Washington tied the game at 4-4. Jon Cahill then drove home Cruz to tie the score at 4-4.

After one out in the eighth inning, Richmond manager Chris Mongiardo brought in left handed reliever Justin Smetana to face the Wild Things left handed hitting Zack Cates. The move backfired. Cates hit the first pitch from Smetana over the right center field fence-giving the Wild Things a 5-4 lead. Four consecutive Washington singles made the score 7-4.

Jason Elkins earned the win to go 2-0 on the season. Justin Semanta took the loss. His record is now 1-1.

The Wild Things created an interesting recreation of the "Sausage Gate" incident that caused Pirate first basemen Randall Simon to be suspended for three games. Nick Aiello struck a horse with a bat during the Wild Things horse race in the seventh inning. Aiello was then arrested and taken from the field-jokingly-in the eighth.

The Wild Things and the Roosters meet Sunday for the second of their three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05. The first 1,000 fans entering Falconi Field will receive a free mousepad, courtesy of Winbeam Cobweb Internet services.
