Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa.-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, blew a ninth inning lead to fall to the Lake Erie Crushers, 7-5, Sunday night. Despite strong offensive performances by Jacob Dempsey, Ernie Banks and Kris Rochelle, the Wild Things could not hold on for a win in the final game of the opening series.
Dempsey hit a solo homerun to lead off the second inning for the Wild Things and added another RBI and a single later in the game. First baseman Banks got a triple and a single and scored two runs, while Rochelle added a double, single, RBI and a run. But it would not be enough for the home team.
The Wild Things led 5-4 after eight innings, but Lake Erie took the lead in the top of the ninth. Crushers left fielder Tim Binkoski drove in the tying run, hitting a double with runners on first and third. A dropped fly ball by left fielder Joe Spiers brought in the winning run. The Crushers added one more run on a sacrifice fly by Luke Hetherington to secure the victory.
Third baseman Grant Psomas kept the Wild Things' hopes alive with a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth. But the Crushers and winning pitcher Nick Tisone held on, striking out designated hitter Alan Robbins in the next at-bat.
With the win, Lake Erie took the opening series of the season two games to one. The Wild Things have an off day on Monday before heading to Gateway for a three-game series with the Grizzlies starting Tuesday. Tune in to WJPA 95.3 FM at 7:55 p.m. to listen to the game.
The Wild Things return to Washington on June 2 for a six-game homestand. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
