Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Wild Things have signed right-handed pitcher Levi MaVorhis, who has spent his entire professional career in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, most recently pitching for the Peoria Chiefs of the A Midwest League. In a corresponding move, infielder Jordan Edgerton has been placed on the suspended list.
After spending his college career at Kansas State University from 2013-2016, MaVorhis signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent shortly after his senior year. He began his professional career in rookie ball with the Johnson City Cardinals, where he made 18 appearances in 2016, 17 of which coming out of the bullpen, going 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA over 35 innings.
MaVorhis spent the 2017 season in low-A with the State College Spikes, where he made three starts, but still was used primarily in the bullpen, making 14 of his 17 appearances in relief. MaVhoris pitched well for State College, posting a 2.06 ERA over 42.3 innings while striking out 39 batters and walking just 11.
Before signing with the Cardinals, MaVorhis had a successful college career at Kansas State. In his four years, he led the Wild Cats in wins (19), innings (245) and strikeouts (162). As a freshman, MaVorhis appeared in 23 games-- six as a starter-- for a Wildcats' squad that went on to win the Big 12 championship, going 5-0 with a 4.77 era. With Peoria this season, he went 3-0 over 37 innings.
"We look to shift Levi back to a starter after three seasons in relief for the St. Louis Cardinals," said Tony Buccilli, assistant general manager of baseball operations. "He showed a great career at Kansas State, pitching in the Big 12. Professionally, he has shown the ability to attack hitters and limit traffic at multiple levels."
MaVorhis will be active tonight, and is scheduled to make his Wild Things' debut in Saturday's game at Traverse City. The Wild Things play the rubber game of their series with Joliet tonight at 7:05 p.m.
