Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Shane Mardirosian floated a two-run single into right-center field and the Gateway Grizzlies walked off on the Evansville Otters, 7-6, in 10 innings Wednesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Gateway (27-37) was a strike away from winning in the ninth inning, but Otters outfielder Ryan Long belted a two-strike, two-out, three-run homer to tie the game at five.
Evansville (30-31) scored a run in the top of the 10th inning on a single and three walks, but the Grizzlies bounced back with two walks and two singles to win without recording a 10th-inning out.
With the victory, Gateway clawed to six games back of the first-place River City Rascals in the West Division. The top five teams in the West - and the top four teams in the East - are separated by only two games.
Jeff Cardenas went 3-for-4 with a walk and his second professional home run - both on the Grizzlies' current homestand. In his last four games, Cardenas is 7-for-11 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and three walks.
Mike Elwood tossed seven strong innings for the Grizzlies but did not factor in the decision. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out seven without a walk.
Kevin Simmons took the blown save, his third of the season, in the ninth. Patrick Boyle (2-2) entered in the 10th inning with a run already across, the bases loaded and two outs. He struck out the only Otter he faced and snared his second win as a professional.
Mardirosian was 2-for-4. Justin Ellison added two hits of his own, including his fifth home run of 2018. In two games since returning from a month-long injury absence, Ellison is 4-for-8 with a walk, a home run, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base; his batting average is .299 for the season.
Gateway and Evansville will play a crucial rubber match of their three-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
