Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox notched their first home win of the 2012 season, with three two-out wild pitches in the ninth inning allowing designated hitter Jimmy Cesario to score the winning run sealing a 3-2 victory over the Las Vegas 51s at Security Service Field. The win was also the Sky Sox third come-from-behind victory already this year.
The Sky Sox pitching staff held the Las Vegas offense in check, a day after Colorado Springs allowed 14 runs in the series opener, to set up the dramatic ninth inning walk-off wild pitch by 51s right-hander Jim Hoey (0-1, 10.38 ERA). Sky Sox left-fielder Andrew Brown tied up the ballgame in the seventh with a solo home run, the first by a Sky Sox player at Security Service Field in 2012 and his first of the season, to put Colorado Springs in position to win.
Colorado Springs second baseman DJ LeMahieu went 3-for-4 with a RBI double in the first inning to tie up the game at 1-1 after Las Vegas left-fielder Travis Snider singled in a run in the top of the first, his sixth RBI already in the series. With the double in the first, LeMahieu extended his team-high hitting streak to eight games.
Sky Sox starter Alex White (0-1, 4.32 ERA) was left with a no decision, but allowed only four hits in the final four innings of his five-inning start. The Colorado Springs bullpen allowed no runs and only two baserunners in the final four innings of the game, and Sky Sox reliever Edgmer Escalona (2-0, 0.00) got the win as he tossed two no-hit innings. Escalona has not allowed a run in five innings this year, and the win was his fourth decision in five appearances (two wins, two saves).
The Sky Sox will look to carry the momentum of the dramatic win as they send out left-hander Christian Friedrich (1-1, 2.92 ERA), who allowed just two hits in 7.1 innings in his last start April 10 at Tacoma, against 51s right-hander Yohan Pino (0-1, 24.00 ERA) at 1:05 p.m. MT.
