Hickory Crawdads News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - RHP Joe Wieland surrendered only one hit through five shutout frames to lead the Hickory Crawdads to a 2-1 win against the Lakewood BlueClaws before 7,332 fans at FirstEnergy park on Friday night. First pitch was delayed 1:30 due to rain.
The Crawdads (19-14, 52-50) got out to a quick start, moving ahead 1-0 with a run in the top of the first inning against RHP Heitor Correa (7-5) and the BlueClaws. CF Cody Podraza walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sac bunt by DH Jared Bolden, and raced home on an RBI double hit off the top of the left field wall by 1B Erik Morrison.
With a lead right out of the gates, Wieland (3-2) took the mound to start the game for Hickory, and completely shut down the BlueClaws (18-15, 60-42) offense through his five innings of work. Wieland allowed only one hit, a line drive single in the third, and one walk with three strikeouts in his five-inning shutout performance.
RHP Cody Eppley took over with two perfect innings, inducing four ground outs and striking out two, while keeping the BlueCalws off the board through seven frames. The Crawdads bats tacked on another tally in the top of the eighth. Bolden started the inning with a single and stole his way to second base. With one out later in the inning, C Doug Hogan brought Bolden in with an RBI single past the diving 1B Jeremy Hamilton into right field, making it 2-0.
Facing RHP Tyler Tufts in the bottom of the eighth, the BlueClaws managed to get on the board. SS Troy Hanzawa was hit by pitch to start the frame, moved to third on a single by C Kyle Lafrenz and scored on a base hit by 3B Korby Mintken. However, Tufts induced a pop out back to the mound and a double play to get out of the rest of the inning with the lead intact, 2-1.
RHP Matt Nevarez then took over on the mound and slammed the door on the BlueClaws with a one-two-three bottom of the ninth, including consecutive strikeouts to close the 2-1 win for the Crawdads. Wieland earned the win and Nevarez logged his ninth save for Hickory, while Correa picked up the loss for Lakewood.
