Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB - When the curtain goes up on the 2010-11 Western Hockey League season Friday night at Westman Place, 20-year old Shayne Wiebe will be wearing the "C" on his Brandon Wheat Kings' jersey.

The Wheat Kings have announced that the Brandon born left-winger has been named the 54th Captain in franchise history.

A former member of the Kamloops Blazers, Wiebe was obtained by the Wheat Kings in December 2009 and helped lead Brandon to the 2010 Eastern Division pennant and a berth in the Memorial Cup Championship Final in May.

Wiebe replaces Brayden Schenn and Matt Calvert as Captain of the WHL club. While Calvert is entering his first season of professional hockey in the Columbus Blue Jackets' organization, Schenn continues to skate with the Kings in Los Angeles.

Serving as Alternate (or is it Assistant) Captains this season will be veteran blueliner Brodie Melnychuk, right-winger Mark Stone and Dallas Stars' first round draft choice Scott Glennie.

In 65 games last season, the 6' 190 lb. Wiebe scored 23 goals and 50 points while accumulating 76 minutes in penalties. During his three year Western League career, the former AAA Midget Wheat King has 132 points, including 64 goals in 204 games.

Tickets to Friday's Opener are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

As for Season Tickets, the club has announced that as of noon Friday, a total of 2,940 had been purchased.
