Little Falls, N.J. - A.J. Wideman fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his fourth straight win as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the first-place Worcester Tornadoes a 5-0 loss in Friday night's series opener at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Wideman (4-2) relied on a solid defensive effort, striking out one batter without issuing a walk as he scattered five hits. New Jersey reliever Steve Fox finished off the Tornadoes by retiring all four batters he faced. Former Jackal Ryan Lobban (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 5 1/3 frames.

As the contest went scoreless through four and a half innings, New Jersey plated the game's first runs in bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Sean Smith led off with a single and Mike DeJesus followed by dribbling a ball towards short, reaching on an infield single before both runners advanced on a throwing error by Worcester shortstop Tony Patane. The next batter, D'Angelo Jimenez, flared a two-run single down the left field line to open the scoring.

The Jackals extended their lead to 3-0 when catcher Chris Anderson scorched his seventh home run of the season off the scoreboard leading off the sixth inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Myron Leslie and Nick Giarraputo leading off the eighth inning helped New Jersey take a 4-0 lead before the Jackals scored their fifth and final run on a throwing error by Worcester second baseman Abraham Nunez later in the frame.

Smith finished the evening 4-for-5 while Myron Leslie added a pair of doubles in a three-hit outing.

The Jackals and Tornadoes play the middle contest of their three-game series on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (10-3, 2.87 ERA) to the mound against Worcester right-hander Kevin Cooper (5-2, 3.82 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
