Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors have agreed to terms with rookie forward Mark Derlago (der-LAY-go) for the 2007-08 season, head coach Marty Raymond announced Thursday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

Derlago, 21, begins his pro career after spending the last four years playing juniors for the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings.

Last season, he led the WHL with 46 goals and finished 10th with 81 points. Derlago tied for first in the league with 24 power-play goals and netted two hat tricks, on his way to being named Brandon's team Most Valuable Player for a second straight year. He also notched 10 playoff points last season, second most among Brandon scorers.

"Mark has great skills and is a pure scorer," Raymond said. "As an independent team, getting a player like him with a chance to go to the next level is always exciting."

In 2005-06, Derlago led the Wheat Kings with 28 goals, ranked second with 53 points and was named team MVP. The 6-foot, 197-pound native of Brandon, Manitoba missed the entire 2004-05 season after suffering a broken neck during a preseason game. He began his career with Brandon in 2003-04 and was selected the club's Rookie of the Year. Derlago was teammates with current Condor Reagan Leslie that season.

"I'm really excited to get started," Derlago said. "I want to contribute all around and hope the puck keeps finding its way into the net."

His uncle, Bill Derlago, was a No. 1 pick (fourth selection overall) of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks in 1978. Bill played eight-plus seasons in the NHL for Vancouver, Toronto, Boston, Winnipeg and Quebec. In 555 total NHL games, he posted 416 points (189g, 227a).

With the addition of Derlago, there are now 11 players inked for 2007-08, seven of whom are returnees from last season (Scott Balan, Sean Venedam, David Kudelka, Andrew Ianiero, Leslie, Brett Lutes and Jamie Hodson). Derlago, Tyler Noye, Eric Sonnenberg and Tamás Lencsés are the new players coming to Condorstown

The Condors begin their 2007-08 10th Anniversary season Friday, Oct. 19. To view the full 2007-08 schedule, click here. For more information or to reserve season tickets, mini-plans and book group outings contact the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825).
