Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with 24-year-old Defenseman Paul Ballantyne.

Ballantyne, a sixth round draft pick by the Detroit Red Wings in 2000, was acquired by Victoria last season in a trade with the Phoenix Roadrunners in January.

"Paul was a strong addition to our defensive core in the second half of last season, and his experience and work ethic will be a steady building point for our blueline this season," said Dan Belisle, Vice-President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound native of Waterloo, ON played 26 games for the Salmon Kings and tallied 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) and a rating of +5. He scored the game winner to complete the Salmon Kings first three-game road series sweep (versus Utah, March 28-31, 2006).

"I was happy with the experience last year, and Mo [Mark Morrison] did a good job turning things around to get us into the playoffs," said Ballantyne. "I am looking forward to being in a leadership role and adding what I can to our system."

Since 2002, Ballantyne has tallied 252 games between the American Hockey League (AHL) and ECHL and notched 109 points. He played his first two pro seasons with the Toledo Storm, and in 2003-04 notched 36 points in 54 games. He had three visits to the AHL with the Grand-Rapids Griffins, wherein he played a total 39 games, and is a product of the Ontario Hockey League's Sault-Ste.-Marie Greyhounds.

The Salmon Kings will kick off their fourth season in the ECHL in Idaho on Oct 19, 2007, and will host the Las Vegas Wranglers for the Home Opener Series on Oct 26 and 27.
