Calgary, AB - Scott Glennie and the Brandon Wheat Kings (27-13-0-2) welcome Carter Bancks and the Lethbridge Hurricanes (13-22-3-1) for one of six Western Hockey League match-ups on Wednesday, January 6th.
Wednesday night's contest between the Wheat Kings and Hurricanes can be seen LIVE on Rogers Sportsnet in the West and Pacific regions (7:00pm CST).
The Wheat Kings are coming off an 8-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in Brandon on Saturday for their second straight victory, and currently sit in second place in the East Division and third in the Eastern Conference. The Wheat Kings have scored a WHL-best 181 goals this season, and have tallied 14 goals over their last two games. Glennie has two goals and four points in four games since returning from the holiday break.
The Hurricanes are coming off a 4-2 win in Calgary over the Central Division-leading Hitmen on Sunday for their third victory in their last four games, but currently sit tied with Edmonton for 11th place in the Eastern Conference. The Hurricanes are 6-12-0-1 on the road this season, but have won their last two road games. Bancks (11g-24a) leads the âCanes in scoring with 35 points this season.
It's the third meeting of the season between the Wheat Kings and Hurricanes. The teams split the first two meetings, with the road team winning on each occasion.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, Ryan Howse and the Chilliwack Bruins (18-18-1-5) host Dallas Jackson and the Prince George Cougars (9-29-1-1) for a B.C. Division contest.
The Bruins dropped a 2-1 decision to the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday in the back half of a home-and-home series between the teams, and currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference. Howse leads all WHL players with 30 goals this season.
The Cougars split a two-game series versus the visiting Kamloops Blazers, dropping a 5-2 decision on Sunday that snapped a two-game win streak, and remain in 10th place in the Western Conference. The Cougars have won just three road games this season, including their most recent road outing in Vancouver on December 30th.
In Kelowna, B.C., Shane McColgan and the Kelowna Rockets (19-21-2-0) welcome Shane Harper and the Everett Silvertips (22-16-2-1).
The Rockets are coming off a 6-3 loss in Vancouver on Sunday for their sixth loss in their last seven games, and currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference. McColgan (17g-25a) now holds the Rockets' franchise record for most points by a 16-year-old rookie with 42.
The Silvertips topped the Blazers 5-3 in Kamloops on Tuesday night for their third straight victory and second straight road triumph. Harper ranks second on the âTips with 24 goals and leads the team with 45 points this season.
In Cranbrook, B.C., Dustin Sylvester and the Kootenay Ice (22-15-1-2) welcome Stefan Elliott and the Saskatoon Blades (29-7-1-3) for a battle between two of the WHL's hottest teams.
The Ice have been idle since picking up an 8-4 win over the visiting Regina Pats on New Year's Eve, stretching their winning streak to five games, and currently sit tied with Red Deer for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Sylvester has racked up five goals and 13 points over his last six games.
The Blades are coming off a 5-4 win in Spokane on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory and their fifth straight road triumph, and currently sit in first place overall in the WHL standings. The Blades have allowed an Eastern Conference-low 110 goals this season.
In Moose Jaw, SK, Brendan Rowinski and the Moose Jaw Warriors (20-15-1-2) host Bretton Cameron and the Medicine Hat Tigers (24-12-3-4) on Wednesday.
The Warriors have won three straight games - all versus the Prince Albert Raiders - and have climbed back into a tie with the Raiders for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Rowinski has scored four goals and five points over his last three games.
The Tigers are coming off a 4-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday in the back half of a home-and-home series between the teams on the weekend, and currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Tigers are 9-9-2-2 on the road this season.
In other WHL action on Wednesday, Willie Coetzee and the Red Deer Rebels (22-15-0-3) battle Craig Cunningham and the Vancouver Giants (25-14-1-2).
The Rebels picked up a pair of wins over the Edmonton Oil Kings on the weekend in a home-and-home series between the teams, and have climbed into a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference thanks to 12 wins in their last 18 games. The Rebels have won five straight games at home.
The Giants are coming off a 6-3 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Sunday, snapping a two-game losing skid, and currently hold an 11-point lead for first place in the B.C. Division. Cunningham picked up two goals and four points in Sunday's win over the Rockets, moving him into a tie with Calgary's Brandon Kozun for the WHL scoring lead with 63 points.
