
Whitmore Heads Maine Sports Hall of Fame

PORTLAND - Richard L. (Dick) Whitmore, Waterville, was elected President of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors May 30.
Whitmore succeeds William E. Haggett, West Bath, who served while continuing to hold the office of first vice president following the resignation of Richard A. Davis, Cape Elizabeth in November, 2011.
A four-year member of the MSHF Board, Whitmore is chair of the banquet committee. He also serves on the fund raising and membership, nominating and long range planning committees.
Whitmore concluded a 40-year career as head coach of men's basketball at Colby College in 2011. At the time of his retirement, Whitmore's 637 career wins ranked seventh among NCAA Division III men's basketball coaches.
A 1965 graduate of Bowdoin College, Whitmore scored more than 1,000 points for the Polar Bears. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
As part of ceremonies at the 2012 Final Four, Whitmore was honored as recipient of the Division III Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Elected to a three-year term as director is Colleen J. Quint, Minot. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Bates College and the University of Maine School of Law, Quint served as Executive Director, 1999-2011, of the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute in Portland.
As a Board member of The Harold Alfond Scholarship Foundation, Quint chairs the Education and Marketing Committee. She was chosen to serve on the Sports Done Right Select Panel and was a co-author of the report.
Quint is a former President of the National Scholarship Providers Association and was recently called on by the Boston Red Sox to help develop an expansion of their Red Sox Scholars program.
Quint is now special consultant at Maguire Associates, Concord, MA. Her primary focus is as co-author of a book concerning equity issues in higher education access and attainment.
Other recently-elected directors include Mary Mitchell Friedman, Cape Elizabeth and Gerald R. (Jerry) Perkins, Orrington.
Mary Mitchell Friedman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Colby College and the University of Maine School of Law. She is a founding member, past president and current director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute.
She is also a founding board member and former president of the Maine Equal Justice Project and the Maine Equal Justice Partners, organizations dedicated to the representation of low income Maine citizens.
Since 2007 Friedman has served as a part-time faculty member at the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn campus. She teaches "Toward a Global Ethics"- a core curriculum course designed to teach students ethical decision-making processes.
Jerry Perkins graduated from Brewer High School and the University of Maine. An offensive guard under the late Harold S. Westerman, and 2012 Maine Sports Hall of Fame inductee Walter H. Abbott, Perkins started on the Maine team which participated in the 1965 Tangerine Bowl.
As wrestling coach at Rumford High and Mountain Valley, formed when Rumford and Mexico merged, Perkins ' teams compiled a dual-meet record of 432-73-7 with winning streaks of 57, 47, 39 and 28. Five times he was voted Maine Wrestling Coach of the Year. Perkins retired in 2001 and was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
