WhiteWings Win Fifth Straight

Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (10-8) are winners of five-straight for the first time since winning six-in-a-row from June 18-through-June 23, 2007 after beating the Laredo Broncos (4-14) 6-5 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The Broncos got on the board right away against Juan Peralta. With one out in the top of the first, Jamie Morales singled and stole second base. After Mario Mendez walked and former-WhiteWing Argelis Nunez was hit by a pitch, Andres Santos hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings took the lead against Luis Arroyo (0-1) in the bottom of the first. Stephen Ward led off with a walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Jonathan Poterson. One out later, Poterson moved to third on a Brian Nichols single and scored on a Welinson Baez single. Joaquin Rodriguez followed with a fly-ball down the right field line that was dropped by Mario Mendez for a three- base, two-run error to make it 4-1.

The Broncos tied the game in the third. With one out, Mendez reached on an infield single and Nunez hit his second home run of the season. One out later, Miguel Ortiz doubled and O.J. Garza followed with an infield single. The throw to first by Agustin Septimo went wide, allowing Ortiz to score.

In the bottom of the fourth, Baez walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Casey Allen to make it 5-4.

The Broncos tied it again in the top of the fifth against Ryan Dixon (1-0) when Mendez reached on an error, stole second, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Santos.

The WhiteWings retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Septimo led off with a sinle and moved to second on a balk. Two batters later, Nichols hit an RBI-single to make it 6-5.

Julio Santana pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. Left-hander Jorge Lugo (1-0) is expected to face right-hander Gustavo Vasquez (1-0).
