
Broncos drop close one to WhiteWings

June 29, 2009-Harlingen, TX-the Laredo Broncos battled but came up a bit short as they lost to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings by a score of 6-5 at Harlingen Field, on Monday.
The Broncos jumped out to the early lead in the 1st inning. With 1 out, Jaime Morales singled and then stole 2nd base. Mario Mendez then walked and was followed by Argelis Nunez being hit by a pitch, to load the bases. Andres Santos came up and hit a sacrifice fly scoring Morales and giving the Broncos the early 1-0 lead.
The WhiteWings got on the scoreboard in their half of the 1st. Stephen Ward led off the inning with a walk and went to 2nd groundout. Jonathan Poterson then came up and hit a rbi single scoring Ward from 2nd. Brian Nichols followed with a single which moved Poterson to 3rd. Welinson Baez came up and hit a single of his own scoring Poterson. Joaquin Rodriguez then hit a high fly ball to the right fielder Mario Mendez who dropped the ball. That allowed both Nichols and Baez to score and Rodriguez to advance all the way to 3rd. That gave Rio Grande Valley a 4-1 lead.
The Broncos got closer in the top of the 3rd inning. With 1 out, Mario Mendez hit an infield single. Argelis Nunez then smacked a 2 run home run over the left center field wall, his 2nd of the season. Then with 2 outs Miguel Ortiz doubled. OJ Garza then hit a ball up the middle and the 2nd baseman Augustin Septimo's throw was high and got by the 1st baseman. That allowed Ortiz to score and Garza to head to 2nd. The game was now tied at 4.
Rio Grande Valley regained the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning. Welinson Baez led off the inning with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Casey Allen stepped out and hit a rbi single scoring Baez from 2nd. That would make the score 5-4 in favor of the WhiteWings.
Laredo tied up the game in the top of the 5th inning. Mario Mendez led off the inning by reaching on an error by 1st baseman Alberto Cruz. Then with 1 away, Mendez stole 2nd and 3rd base to put himself in scoring position. Andres Santos hit his 2nd sacrifice fly on the night scoring Mendez, and tying the game at 5.
The WhiteWings jumped back in front in the bottom of the 5th. Brian Nichols delivered a rbi single scoring Augustin Septimo from 2nd, and making the score 6-5.
Broncos' starter Luis Arroyo was taken out after 7 innings of work. He gave up 6 runs only 4 of which were earned on 6 hits. He walked 3 batters, struck out 5, and was in line for the loss. Jason Herman came into the game for the Broncos. Herman threw a scoreless inning and Laredo trailed by 1 heading to the 9th against WhiteWings closer Julio Santana.
Laredo would go 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th, as they lost their 10th straight road game by a score of 6-5.
The Broncos scored 5 runs on 10 hits and had 1error while the WhiteWings scored 6 runs on 7 hits and had 2 errors.
The Broncos are now 4-14 on the season while the WhiteWings are 10-8. The Broncos will next be in action Tuesday June 30th as they play the 3rd game of a 4 game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at 7:05.
