WhiteWings Take Season Opener in Alexandria

Alexandria, LA - Harlingen WhiteWings (1-0) first baseman Brian Nichols drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the tenth inning to beat the Alexandria Aces (0-1) 7-6 tonight at Bringhurst Field.

The Aces got on the board quickly against Joey Cress as Blake Butler walked and scored one batter later on a Bryan Sabatella home run. Then, with two outs, Luis Guance singled, stole second, and scored on a Madison Edwards double to make it 3-0.

The WhiteWings responded in the top of the second against Ryan Harris. Ryan Fox led off with a walk and went to third on a Brian Nichols single before scoring on a David Fowler single on which Nichols moved to third. Kevin Griffin grounded into a double play to send Nichols home and make it 3-2 Aces.

Brad Turney led off the bottom of the second by getting hit by a pitch and later scored on a Homey Ovalles ground out to make it 4-2.

The WhiteWings tied it in the fourth when Argelis Nunez doubled and Candelario Perez singled. Bub Bergstrom followed with a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Miguel Peguero hit an RBI-double to make it 4-4.

In the top of the fifth, Fowler led off with an infield single and Griffin walked to chase Harris. Ryan Rockholt came in and gave up an RBI-single to Candelario Perez, the second batter he faced, to make it 5-4 WhiteWings.

Alex Gett couldn't hold the lead, though. With one out, Guance reached on an error and stole second. Jose Umbria then hit a two-out RBI-single to tie the game 5-5.

The WhiteWings took the lead off of Felipe Garcia in the top of the eighth when Perez doubled, moved to third on a wild pickoff attempts and scored on a wild pitch.

Derek Bennett came in for the save, but with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Guance homered over the left field wall to tie the game at six and force extra-innings.

The WhiteWings will and Aces will play two of this three-game set tomorrow at 10:35 a.m. as lefty Jorge Lugo makes his Harlingen debut against lefty Alexis Sosa.
