Colts Bats Wide Awake in Opening Day Win

May 13, 2008 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release

EDINBURG, Texas - The time was 10:42 a.m. CT, but the umpire said "Play Ball," and Tyrone Pendergrass stepped into the left-handed batter's box at Edinburg Baseball Stadium to start the 2008 San Angelo Colts season. It may have been early for a baseball game, but the Colts' bats were ready to go. Behind big games at the plate from Andres Rodriguez and Bryan Frichter, the Colts rolled to a 13-6 victory over the Edinburg Coyotes

The Colts' offense banged out 14 hits, recorded four walks and two hit batsmen-both with the bases loaded-and scored in four straight innings from the third to the sixth. Frichter was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Rodriguez was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and was a triple short of the cycle.

Edinburg got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Daryl Jones launched a 3-2 pitch from Colts starter Luke Massetti over the left field bullpen for a solo home run. Massetti recovered well though and hurled four innings, giving up two runs on four hits. He was relieved by righty Caleb Rodgers (1-0), who worked three scoreless innings, working around three hits. Rodgers was awarded the win since Massestti didn't last the required five innings to qualify for the victory. Also, Logan Williamson gave up three runs in a tough eighth inning, before closer Brian Daly allowed a run in the ninth.

Trailing 1-0, San Angelo came right back in the top of the third. With one out and nobody on, rookie right fielder Bryan Frichter smashed a double off the left-center field wall in the first at-bat of his professional career. After a walk to catcher Wyn Diggs, Pendergrass slapped an infield single to deep shortstop to load the bases. John Beal evened up the score when he was hit by a pitch by Coyotes starter Geivy Garcia (0-1). John Anderson gave the Colts the lead with a bases loaded walk, and then with two out, DH Benny Craig singled home two more runs to make it 4-1.

San Angelo added a pair of runs in the fourth with another rally started by Frichter and Diggs. Each of them singled and Pendergrass walked to load the bases once again. The Colts took a 5-1 edge when Anderson singled home a run and Crosland then recorded the second bases-loaded HBP to force in another run. Garcia, who had retired the first seven batters of the game, left in the fourth, lasting just 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits.

The Colts kept the pedal to the metal in the fifth with another four-spot, helped by a throwing error by Coyotes third baseman Mayobanex Santana. He fielded a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Frichter but threw the ball away past first base, allowing two runs to score on the play. Pendergrass also laced an RBI double off the right-centerfield wall to help chase the first of three Edinburg relievers, Luke Prihoda, who lasted just two-thirds of an inning and gave up four runs, three earned. San Angelo picked up a single run in the sixth on an RBI double by Frichter, and tallied two more in the ninth when Rodriguez hit the first Colts homer of the year, a two-run shot over the high wall in left-centerfield.

The Colts continue this three-game series in Edinburg with another 10:35 a.m. start on Wednesday, May 14. The game will be broadcast live online once again through www.KCLL-FM.com., beginning at 10:20 a.m. CT. The Colts return to San Angelo for their home opener at Foster Field on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m., and following the game fans will be treated to a Fireworks Show sponsored by Adobe Signs & T-shirts and KLST.
