Broncos win 2008 season opener in dramatic fashion

LAREDO, TX-The Laredo Broncos kick started their 2008 season with a 7-6 walk off victory at Veterans Field in front of a crowd of 2083. The Broncos continue their six game season opening home stand with the middle game of a three game series with Amarillo on Wednesday at Veterans Field. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).

The Broncos got the scoring going early in the bottom of the 2nd when Jose Salas hit a solo shot to lead off the inning. After an out 3rd baseman Ivan Reyes added a solo shot to give Laredo a 2-0 lead.

Salas then struck again in the bottom of the 4th as he hit his 2nd home run of the game to make the score 3-0 after 4 innings.

Starting pitcher Santo Hernandez was cruising along thru 5 innings when the Dillas finally struck. After a one out error by Broncos 2nd baseman Mark Lewis Amarillo's 2nd baseman Danny Bravo hit his first hr of the season making the score 3-2.

Then the Dillas tied the game at 3 in the 7th inning with 3 straight 2 out hits with the tying run scoring on a single by centerfield Jonathan Reynoso.

But the Broncos responded with 3 runs in their half of the 7th and were aided by some miscues by Amarillo's defense. With two outs and two runners on centerfield Dwayne White hit a rbi double, then right fielder Santiago Guerrero reached base on an error by the Dilla's first baseman which knocked in a run, and then a wild pitch scored White to give Laredo the 6-3 Lead.

The Dilla's would get one run back in the top half of the 8th, and then re tied the game in the 9th inning when after 2 outs 2 runners reached based and then scored on a throwing error by closer David Watkins making the score 6-6.

But in the bottom of the 9th Dwayne White led off with a single and then with one out and a 3-2 count he was running when Edgard Clemente hit a walk off double to send the Broncos fans home happy with a 7-6 victory.

The starting pitcher for the Broncos Santo Hernandez got a no decision for the Broncos but pitched well going 6 2/3 giving up 3 run 1 which was earned on 6 hits and he struck out 8 and only walked one.
