Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings outlasted the San Angelo Colts to win 4-3 and take game one of their playoff series Monday night at Harlingen Field.

WhiteWings' starting pitcher Alexander Concepcion gave up just three runs and just one before the eighth inning to get the win.

The WhiteWings, who held a 4-1 lead entering the top of the eighth inning, saw their three-run cushion evaporate in a hurry. CJ Beatty led the inning off with a double as the next batter, Cory Patton, hit his 26th homerun of the year to cut the WhiteWings' lead to just one.

The bullpen, however, recorded the next five outs to preserve a victory.

Gabriel Ortiz put the WhiteWings on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a solo homerun to give the WhiteWings a 1-0 lead.

Concepcion, who had pitched five scoreless innings, allowed a solo homerun in the sixth inning with two outs to tie the score at 1.

The WhiteWings came back the next half-inning to tie the score when Wilmer Pino hit his 14th homerun of the year to give the lead right back to the WhiteWings.

In the seventh, the WhiteWings tacked on two insurance runs to give themselves a three-run lead up 4-1.

Patton responded with his two-run homerun to draw within one, but the WhiteWings' bullpen successfully closed the game out.

Eric Blackwell (8-3, 3.01 ERA), and the league leader in ERA is expected to start game two for the WhiteWings, played tomorrow night at Harlingen Field at 7:05 PM. Adam Kramer (4-3, 6.83 ERA) is expected to start for the Colts.
