Three WhiteWings Finish as Statistical Champs; Playoffs Start Monday

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings of the North American League have completed their 2011 regular season. The Wings finished with a record of 51-37 and finished in second place in the NAL South Division. Outfielder David Peralta finished as North American League batting champ, starting pitcher Eric Blackwell led the league in ERA and closer Edgar Martinez led the league in saves. The playoffs for the 2011 NAL Championship begin tonight.

Peralta, in his first year as a batter, finished the year hitting .392 - 13 points above Calgary's Jimmy Rohan (.379). A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Peralta also finished first in hits (133), first in extra-base hits (52), second in total bases (224), second in doubles (30), third in slugging percentage (.661) and fourth in RBIs (80).

Eric Blackwell, in just his second year as a pitcher, held a 3.01 ERA to lead the league to go with his 8-3 record. Blackwell, a 25-year old from Simi Valley, California, finished with 100 strikeouts, tied for second-most in the league.

Closer Edgar Martinez had 20 saves to lead the league. The former Boston Red Sox prospect had a 2.48 ERA with a 10:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Peralta, Blackwell and Martinez helped the WhiteWings get into the playoffs for the second consecutive year, finishing 14 games above .500 at 51-37.

The WhiteWings start a best-of-seven playoff series against the San Angelo Colts on Monday night at Harlingen Field at 7:05 PM in the South division championship series. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night at Harlingen Field before the series shifts to San Angelo for games three and four and for games five, six and seven if necessary.
