Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Edinburg - After going 20-and-62 last season, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings picked up their twenty-first win of the season by beating the Edinburg Roadrunners 7-2 tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings (21-22) are now winners of four-in-a-row.
The WhiteWings got on the board against Miguel Martinez (3-4) in the second. Brian Nichols hit a leadoff single and Alberto Cruz hit his seventh home run of the year to make it 2-0.
With two outs in the fifth, Rico Santana was hit by a pitch, Nichols singled and Welinson Baez hit an RBI-double. A wild pitch scored Nichols and moved Baez to third. Alberto Cruz followed with an RBI- double to make it 5-0.
The Roadrunners (19-24) had numerous opportunities against Juan Peralta (1-2) throughout the first four innings, but three double plays squashed those opportunities. Finally, with one out in the fifth, Vincent Blue and Eric Gonzlaez hit back-to-back doubles to make it 5-1.
That was it against Peralta, who scattered eight hits and one walk in six innings while striking out three.
In the top of the seventh, Santana was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. One out later, Baez doubled, moving Santana to third. Ricardo Serrano came in to strike out Cruz, but threw two wild pitches with Juan Cabrera batting to allow Santana and Baez to score making it 7-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, Robert Matlock drew a one out walk and Hunter Owen drew a two-out walk against Juan Diaz. Carlos Hereaud followed with an RBI-double to make it 7-2.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Juan Jimenez. Ryan Dixon came in and threw a wild pitch, allowing a run to score before retiring Bryon Smith to record his first save.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:00. Left-hander Jesus Sanchez (3-0) is expected to face right-handed pitcher Danny Rondon (1-0).
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
