San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas--- Two solo homeruns in the fifth inning by Butch Ballez and Ronnie Gaines, complimented by Chandler Barnard's league leading eighth win of the season gave the San Angelo Colts (30-13) their third straight victory. The Coastal Bend Thunder (21-22) loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not get a run home, falling 3-2. San Angelo leads the series three games to none.
For the second night in a row, the Coastal Bend Thunder struck in the first inning. Colts starter Chandler Barnard hit the leadoff hitter, Dustin Smith, in the back. Amadeo Zuzueta followed with an infield single, the speedy Smith advanced to third base. Alfred Joseph lifted a fly ball deep to left field scoring Smith, giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings the Colts got on the board in the third. Hank Lanto began the frame with a single. With one out, Jason Diaz singled to center field. Lanto broke for third, the throw was late as Diaz moved ahead to second base. With runners in scoring position, Bryan Frichter delivered a sacrifice fly to left driving in Lanto, the game was knotted at one.
The Colts offense broke out in the fifth. With nobody out, Butch Ballez deposited his third homerun of the season into the left field bullpen giving San Angelo a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Ronnie Gaines homered for the second consecutive night. Gaines sixth round tripper of the season gave San Angelo a two run lead.
Coastal bend moved to within just one run entering the ninth inning. After working a scoreless eighth inning, Tom Martin went to the mound with a chance to earn his first save as a Colt. In a 3-2 ballgame, the Thunder placed runners at first and second base after a Ballez error and a walk. Thunder second baseman Chris Lewis attempted to advance the runners on a sacrifice bunt. Martin fielded the ball and fired to third, Frichter picked the ball out of the dirt as the base runner was punched out. The call by umpire Joel Garcia led to the ejection of manager Al Gallagher, as he sprinted onto the field to argue the call. The bases would then be loaded by a Michael Lewis single. As the Colts clung to a one run lead, Martin induced back to back groundouts to hand the Colts their ninth one run win of the season.
Chandler Barnard (8-1) grabbed his league leading eighth win of the season scattering four hits, giving up two earned runs while striking out six. Jameson Maj worked in the seventh inning not allowing a hit or an earned run. The save was allocated to Tom Martin, the southpaw pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning. He became the sixth Colt to notch a save this season. Alejandro Martinez (1-1) was the losing pitcher.
