Roadrunners drop third straight

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners fell behind early against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and suffered their third loss of the four game series with a 7-3 loss on Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Miguel Martinez (3-3) picked up the loss after he allowed seven runs while scattering nine hits and striking out four in six and a third innings pitched.

Alberto Cruz hit a two-run home run against Martinez in the top of the second inning that gave the WhiteWings a 2-0 lead.

RGV scored three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning starting with Rico Santana who was hit by a pitch with two outs then moved to second on a single by Brian Nichols. Welinson Baez then hit an RBI double down the third base line that allowed Santana to score from second. Cruz then followed with a double of his own that scored Baez from second which extended the WhiteWings lead to 5-0.

The Roadrunners scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Eric Gonzalez that scored Vincent Blue from second to make it a 5-1 game.

RGV extended their lead 7-1 in the top of the seventh on two wild pitches by Roadrunners' reliever Ricardo Serrano that scored Santana and Baez from third base.

Edinburg scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double by Carlos Hereaud that scored Robert Matlock from second that made the score 7-2.

The Roadrunners added another run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a wild pitch by WhiteWings' reliever Ryan Dixon but could not catch RGV losing 7-3.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the final game of this four-game series on Sunday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Danny Rondon (0-0) is expected to face Jesus Sanchez (3-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
