Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (39-37, 10-16) scored early and held on to defeat the Amarillo Dillas (41-37, 15-13) 4-3 tonight at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings struck in the first against Jorge Lugo (5-4) when Bub Bergstrom and Omar Bramasco led off with walks. Two batters later Ryan Fox hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.
They got two more in the second when Luany Sanchez led off with a single and Danilo Reynoso hit a grounder to third. Jack Chapman fired the ball up the right field line, allowing Sanchez to score and Reynoso to go to third. Alejandro Martinez followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0.
Reynoso led off the fourth with his fifth home run of the season to make it 4-0.
Julian Williams (4-4) came out of the gate sharp, retiring the first eight men he faced. He ran into trouble in the fifth, though, as Chapman led off with a double and Josh Ashton reached on an error. One batter later, Jordan Ramos walked to load the bases and set up Jonathan Reynoso's two-RBI single on which three runs scored thanks to a wild throw by John Beal as he tried to nip Ramos at third.
Derek Bennett got right back on the horse in first outing since allowing his first earned runs of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth for his 14th save.
The WhiteWings and Dillas play game three of this four game set tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. Angel Cordero (1-0) is expected to face Kyle Allen (5-6).
