Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced on Tuesday the signing of right-handed pitcher Jesse Orosco (6-2, 200, Grossmont College), the son of the former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher by the same name.

The 38th round draft pick (1,158th overall) of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2008 MLB draft, the 24-year old Orosco opened up his career with Missoula (Pioneer League, Class R), going 3-0 with a 3.72 ERA in 17 relief appearances in 2008. Orosco struck out two in three perfect innings while combining on a no-hitter at Helena on June 30, 2008.

He was promoted to Yakima (Northwest League, Class A-) at the start of the 2009, where he pitched a scoreless inning before moving onto the San Diego Padres organization and the Arizona Padres (Arizona League, Class R), for whom he posted a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings. He finished the season with El Paso (American Association), where he allowed three runs in 2.2 innings. Last season, Orosco pitched for Tuscon (Golden League) and Lake Erie (Frontier League), posting a combined 3-4 record with an 8.80 ERA.

Overall, Orosco is 6-4 with a 5.71 ERA in 54 relief appearances. In 80.1 innings, he has allowed 107 hits and 44 walks while striking out 55.

Orosco's father is MLB's all-time leader in games pitched (1,252) after pitching 24 seasons from 1979-through-2003 for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins. Orosco signed a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training with the Diamondbacks during the 2003-04 off-season before deciding to retire. The two-time All-Star finished 3rd in the Cy Young award voting and 17th in the NL MVP voting in 1983. He is perhaps best remembered for recording the save in Game 7 of the 1986 World Series and throwing his glove in the air to celebrate the Mets' victory. Orosco pitched 5.2 scoreless innings for two saves during four World Series games, striking out six while allowing two hits.

For his career, the elder Orosco was 87-80 with 144 saves and a 3.16 ERA. In 1,295.1 innings, he allowed 1,055 hits and 581 walks while striking out 1,179 batters.
