Concepcion Three-Hits Thunder

HARLINGEN - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starter Alexander Concepcion took a no-hitter into the sixth en route to an 10-1 victory over the McAllen Thunder in seven innings Game 2 of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.

Concepcion (5-4) retired the first 11 batters he faced. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Wilson Batista hit a grounder to first that Hernandez fielded cleanly, but Concepcion dropped the throw while covering the base, allowing Batista to reach on an error. Concepcion struck out Brian Nichols to end the inning.

Concepcion pitched a 1-2-3 fifth, but Zach Mandelblatt led off the sixth with a double off the center field wall to break-up the no-hitter. Two outs later, Yaibel Tamayo doubled to give the Thunder (24-34) their run.

While pitching the WhiteWings' (32-36) first complete game of the season, Concepcion struck out four.

The WhiteWings scored off of Alien Mora (0-2) right away. Francisco Santana was hit by the first pitch Mora threw and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Leivi Ventura hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0.

Edgar Trejo hit his sixth home run of the season leading off the second to make it 2-0.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with nobody out in the third, setting up a sacrifice fly by Ventura. One out later, Trejo was intentionally walked to load the bases. Alexis Hernandez walked to force-in a run and Gabriel Ortiz hit a two-run single to knock out Mora with the score 6-0.

Wilmer Pino and Trejo hit RBI-singles against Quinn Bright in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-0.

Ventura added a two-run home run in the sixth, his 14th of the season and third of the day. During the doubleheader, Ventura went 5-for-7 with eight RBI and three runs scored.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game three of this four-game series on Thirsty Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Fans can purchase draft beers and cans of soda for $1 as well as bottles of beer and soda for $2 each. Right-hander Eric Blackwell (5-2, 2.95) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
