Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting pitcher Eric Blackwell struck out six while scattering three hits and two walks in six shutout innings to beat the McAllen Thunder 4-1 on Sunday at Harlingen Field in front of a crowd of 2,167.
The Thunder (3-2) only threatened twice against Blackwell. In the top of the second, Yaibel Tamayo singled and James Lilley doubled, but Blackwell (1-0) induced a shallow fly-out and two groundouts to escape unscathed. Tamayo reached third base in the fourth, but Lilley struck out and Eric Eiland grounded out to end the inning.
The WhiteWings (4-1) loaded the bases with one out in the third against Justin Jordan (0-1). After Leivi Ventura bounced back to the pitcher for a fielder's choice at home, Jordan uncorked a wild pitch to allow Edgar Trejo to score the first run of the game.
With one out in the fifth, Jonathan Fernandez singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Ventura to make it 2-0.
The Thunder got their run in the top of the eighth as a leadoff walk and two errors allowed Blake Sanders to score.
The WhiteWings added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run double by catcher Francisco Hernandez, who was signed before the game.
Edgar Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. It's Armed Forces Appreciation Night. Right-hander Blake Nation (0-0, 4.50) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
