Bullpen Blows up Tie Game

Giving up nine runs in the final three innings the Calgary Vipers (1-3) were defeated 13-5 by the Edmonton Capitals (2-0) in the back-half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning Drew Miller launched a three-run shot to tie the game. Five relievers entered the game from there with none of them having success and in total giving up nine tallies on ten hits and six walks.

Alexander Francisco (1-0) recorded the win with five innings while Stephen Whalen (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in a third of an inning.

Edmonton scored first in the top of the second inning when Tom Collaro and Brent Metheny walked and Nick Valdez drove in a run with a base hit for the 1-0 lead.

The Capitals added to the lead in the third frame as Matt Rogelstad and Enrique Cruz singled, with two outs Metheny singled in a run, and Cruz scored on a throwing error for a 3-0 score.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Bryan Burke singled and Jonny Kaplan collected a run batted in triple for a 3-1 game.

Edmonton restored their three-run lead in the next half inning as Pete Tountas went deep with a solo home run for a 4-1 advantage.

The Vipers responded in the bottom of the frame as Jimmy Rohan walked, Brian Rios singled, and Miller corked his second home run of the season to tie the game at 4-4.

The scoring continued in the next half inning as the Capitals restored their three-run lead with three runs of their own when Todd Linden and Tom Collaro doubled, Metheny was intentionally walked, and Valdez drove in two with a single for a 7-4 score.

Edmonton continued the onslaught in the sixth when Linden and Collaro walked, Metheny doubled in a run, Cody Nowlin was intentionally walked, Valdez singled in one, and Tountas singled in two for a 11-4 lead.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Miller walked, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Matt Kavanaugh sacrifice fly for a 11-5 game.

Another two runs were added by the Capitals in the seventh frame as Cruz doubled, Linden tripled in a run, and Metheny doubled in one for a 13-5 score.

Calgary hits the road for a six game series in Edmonton against the Capitals starting on Tuesday May 31st at 7:05 PM MDT.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Monday June 6th at 6:30 PM MDT as they host the Edmonton Capitals.
