Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (18-49) scored five runs on three home runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead, but couldn't hold on as the San Angelo Colts (40-25) walked off winners 12-11 tonight at Foster Field.
Down 10-6 in the top of the ninth against Luke Massetti (5-4), Amadeo Zazueta led off with a double and Cardona hit his fourth home run. Ryan Fox followed with his 11th home run. One out later, Trey Hendricks singled and Brian Nichols hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to give the WhiteWings an 11-10 lead.
Brian Daly (0-5) came on for the save in the bottom of the inning, but Bryan Frichter led off with a walk, John Anderson reached on an infield single and Jose Torres walked to load the bases. Daly struck out Andres Rodriguez and Aaron Cone, but Albert Gonzalez pinch-hit and blooped a two-run single over third to give the Colts the win.
The Colts struck against Armando Casas in the fourth. Anderson led off with a double and Torres walked. One out later Aaron Cone walked. Jason Landreth followed with a grand slam, his fifth home run in the last four games, to make it 4-0.
The WhiteWings came right back in the top of the fifth against Billy McKinney. Anthony Slagle led off with a walk. One out later, Kevin Griffin and Zazueta singled to load the bases. After a David Cardona sacrifice fly, Ryan Fox hit a two-run double to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the inning, though, Anderson singled and Andres Rodriguez hit a one-out home run to make it 6-3.
Miliade Venas took over for the Colts in the seventh. David Fowler greeted him with a double. One out later Zazueta hit his second home run of the season to make it 6-5.
Rodriguez led off the bottom of the inning with a double to knock out Casas. Justin Staatz came in and got two outs, but Wyn Diggs hit an RBI-single to make it 7-5.
Joel Gonzalez led off the eighth with a ground-rule double and scored on an RBI-single by Carl Johnson one out later. Slagle drew a four-pitch walk to knock out Venas, but Massetti escaped the threat.
The Colts hit around in the bottom of the inning. Frichter led off with a bunt single and Anderson walked. After a ground out advanced the runners, Rodriguez was intentionally walked. Aaron Cone followed with a grounder to Slagle, but the flip to second wasn't in time as a run scored. Landreth followed with an RBI-single. Wyn Diggs and Jack Chapman then walked to force in a run, making it 10-6.
The WhiteWings and Colts complete this six-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Alex Gett (3-7) will face left-hander Frank James Jr. (3-5).
