Alexandria, LA - Harlingen WhiteWings (10-17) pitchers Jorge Lugo, Todd Lutz (1-1) and Caleb Balbuena struck out 17 Alexandria Aces (13-13) in a 3-1 win tonight at Bringhurst Field.

Aces' starter Wayne Hedden (0-2) threw his first seven pitches out of the zone, allowing Bub Bergstrom to walk and Kevin Griffin to get a good pitch to hit for a single that moved Bergstrom to third. Brian Nichols grounded into a double play to score Bergstrom, making it 1-0.

Albert Gonzalez hit a leadoff triple against Lugo in the bottom of the first and later scored when Patrick O'Sullivan hit into a fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1.

That would be the only run Lugo allowed in four and two-thirds innings. He struck out eight while giving up three hits and three walks.

The WhiteWings took that run back in the second when Terry Roblez hit a one-out single and David Cardona reached on an infield single to move Roblez to second. Amadeo Zazueta followed with an RBI-single to make it 2-1.

That would be all the scoring until the top of the eighth, when Griffin led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, third on an error, and scored on a passed ball.

Hedden ended up going seven and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on ten hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.

Lutz got the win by retiring the first nine batters he faced, striking out six of them.

Balbuena retired all four batters he faced, striking out three, for his fifth save.

The WhiteWings and travel to Edinburg for the first of three with the Coyotes tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Angel Cordero (0-0) will make his first start of the season for the WhiteWings against right-hander John Maschino (0-1).
