Anderson's Single Wins it for Colts in 11th

San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The longest game of the San Angelo Colts' season in terms of innings was still a short one in terms of time, and John Anderson made the most of a different situation for him, with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the 11th to score Aaron Cone, helping San Angelo beat Laredo 4-3 and take the rubber match of their three-game series.

Anderson did not start for the first time this season, but came in as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. Two innings later, after two errors by Broncos second baseman Matt Lawman, Anderson came through off Dan Sausville (1-1) to give the Colts their dramatic victory.

Laredo (13-13) got on the board first, scoring three unearned runs in the second inning off Frank James. The leadoff man, Santiago Guerrero, reached on an error by third baseman Aaron Cone. Then with two outs, Matt Lawman singled and Anthony Bennett doubled home a pair. He was followed by an RBI single from Eric Padilla.

San Angelo (15-12) slowly chipped away, scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth, before Bryan Frichter singled off reliever David Wasylak with two outs to tie the game in the eighth inning. The Colts had a golden opportunity to win the game in the ninth, but with two on and no outs, Cone was picked off second, and then Wyn Diggs struck out and pinch-hitter Anderson grounded out.

James had his best start of the year so far, going eight innings and allowing just those unearned runs, while walking two and striking out three. The Colts bullpen was stellar after that, with Miliade Venas pitching a scoreless ninth and Alex Merricks (1-0) going the final two frames to get the win in his San Angelo debut. Both Colts relievers gave up hits in all three of their innings, but were helped by Laredo twice not being able to get down a sacrifice bunt. John Odom started for Laredo, and went the first five plus innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits.

Notes: The lefty-hitting Cone doubled off the lefty reliever Rusty Jones in the ninth, his first hit in seven at-bats against a southpaw this year...Pendergrass and Rodriguez each extended their streaks of reaching base to 24 consecutive games, tying Frichter for the longest streak by a Colt this season. Frichter had reached in the first 24 contests...the first nine innings went by in just two hours, 25 minutes...San Angelo is now 3-0 in extra innings, having beaten Alexandria in 10 innings twice earlier this season.

The Colts continue this nine-game homestand with the series opener of a three-game set against the first place Amarillo Dillas at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Sport Clips will be at Foster Field providing haircuts for fans at the park for $5 each, with all proceeds going to charity.

Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
