Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
Despite being five games below .500 through 25 games, the Edinburg Coyotes still find themselves only four games behind the second place San Angelo Colts (14-12). But the Coyotes (10-15) need to find their pitching if they want to make run at second place and secure a spot in playoffs. The Coyotes have a 5.85 ERA as a team so far in the season.
And in case you didn't know, the ULB playoff structure is as follows: No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will be determined by the two teams with the best winning percentage at the midpoint of the season (June 28, 2008). No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will be determined by two of the remaining teams with the best overall winning percentage at the conclusion of the regular season. But despite the rocky start, Coyotes have shown signs of a championship caliber team. Edinburg possesses a team full of talent that cannot be overlooked. For one, Coyotes have Aaron Guerra and Eric Montoya. Guerra, so far, has a 2-0 record and a 2.70 ERA. Montoya is starting to showcase his talent with his team high 32 strikeouts. He had an outstanding game on Sunday as he struck out 14 batters in eight innings of play. Guerra and Montoya packs a one-two punch in the starting rotation that has already dished out a combined 55 strikeouts.
But in baseball, you need more than two good pitchers to make a run at a championship title and Moore knows it. Therefore, he has made some moves that can remedy the pitching dilemma. One of the moves is the acquisition of RHP Toro Trevino. Trevino joined the team on June 3 and in his first start, Trevino pitched six and 2/3 innings striking out six batters but gave up five runs. Another addition to the team is RHP Clint Smith. Smith joined the team on June 2 and has pitched seven innings in three games giving up only four earned runs. He has seven strikeouts so far. LHP Carlos Jan should be making his first appearance in a Coyote uniform either today or tomorrow. He was having a VISA issue that was preventing him from playing but he should be good to pitch once he gets to Edinburg. On another note, Angelo Fermin leads the ULB in stolen bases with 14. His teammates Daryl Jones and Nick Aranda closely follow in second and third respectively.
