WhiteWings Pick up 200th Victory

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Edinburg Roadrunners 8-4 on Thursday at Harlingen Field to pick up the 200th victory in the modern era of the franchise, which dates back to 2006.

The WhiteWings (6-3), who take over sole possession of first place in the North American League South standings, are now 200-248 (.446) in the modern era, including a 109-105 (.509) mark at home.

The Roadrunners (3-6) manufactured a run in the top of the second. Alexander Concepcion (2-0) hit Stantrel Smith with a pitch to start the inning. Smith stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout to make it 1-0.

With one out in the second, Adam Gordon hit his first home run of the season to make it 2-0.

The WhiteWings responded against Jorge Quintero (0-2) in the bottom of the fourth with their first of four-straight two-run innings. With one out, Francisco Hernandez snapped an 0-for-12 skid with a single. With two outs, David Peralta singled and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Wesley Dimitt followed with a two-run single to tie the game.

Brandon Decker was hit by a pitch to start the fifth. One out later, Leivi Ventura hit an RBI-triple and Hernandez hit a sacrifice-fly to make it 4-2 WhiteWings.

Dimitt was hit by a pitch to start the sixth. Leo Delgado followed with an RBI-triple and Jonathan Fernandez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 6-2.

The WhiteWings were hit by five pitches and now lead the league with 17 hit batsmen.

C.J. Beatty hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to bring the Roadrunners within 6-4.

That was it against Concepcion, who struck out five in six and one-third innings.

Ventura led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield-single. One out later, Edgar Trejo hit an RBI-triple and Peralta hit an RBI-double to make it 8-4.

Edgar Martinez recorded the final out for his fourth save.

The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game two of this four-game series on Fan Fly-Away Friday, presented by Allegiant Air and McAllen International Airport at 7:05 p.m. One lucky fan will win two round-trip tickets on Allegiant Air. Right-hander Eric Blackwell (1-0, 0.00) is expected to face right-hander Scott Wingo (1-0, 1.29). Gates open at 6:05.
