San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas---Gorman Romero pitched seven strong innings and the Colts' offense hit three home runs, as San Angelo topped the McAllen Thunder 5-4 in game one of a four game series Thursday night at Foster Field.
McAllen got on the board first when Wilson Batista hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, but in the bottom of the first Daryl Jones (4) countered with a two run home run of his own to put the Colts on top 2-1. Though the Thunder would threaten, San Angelo never relinquished the lead.
The Colts got one more run in the bottom of the third on a Jon Edwards RBI double, and Ronnie Gaines (3) and Jareck West (3) added solo home runs to help the San Angelo cause, but McAllen did not go away. Batista homered again in the sixth, and after scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the Thunder cut it to a one-run Colts lead. Francisco Cruceta came on in the ninth though, to slam the door and preserve the win.
Romero (1-0, 3.60) started and earned the win after allowing four runs in seven innings and McAllen starter Justin Jordan (1-2, 5.82) took the loss, while Cruceta (2) earned his second save.
Game two of the series is Friday night, when the first 1,000 fans in the gate will receive a Colts cap courtesy of Shannon Medical Center. The Colts will send RHP Steve MacFarland (0-1, 12.47) to the mound against Thunder RHP Alec Lewis (1-0, 8.00). MacFarland will be making his second start of the season and is 0-1 with a 12.47 ERA, while Lewis brings a 1-0 record and 8.00 ERA into the ballgame.
