WhiteWings Lose to Edinburg

Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN- Aaron Tullo outdueled Clint Bowker and the Edinburg Roadrunners scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 4-0.

The righthanded Tullo (5-4) struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits and one walk in eight innings to shut out the WhiteWings (50-39) for the first time since July 14.

"I attacked with my fastball; really let it go tonight," said Tullo, 24. After the first inning I quit thinking about location and it worked."

Together with Paul Koss, who set down the WhiteWings in order in the ninth, Tullo allowed only 28 Rio Grande Valley hitters to come up in the game.

It was a change of pitching philosophy for Tullo, who as a product of the Angels organization last year relied on his changeup as an out pitch and has since developed a slider.

Yet Bowker (1-3) was at times the equal of Tullo. Bowker allowed only one run in 7 1/3 innings while scattering eight hits, walking one, and fanning three.

"That kept me in the game more but I just remembered to keep doing what I had; attack the zone with a fastball," said Tullo, who last year was called up to AAA Salt Lake from the Pioneer (Rookie) League.

The Roadrunners (55-35) scored in the first inning off singles from Felix Molina, Carlos Hereaud, and Joe Weik, but then were held off the board until the ninth inning.

Then, with Eddie Dennis Jr. pitching, Vincent Blue tripled to left center just beyond the reach of centerfielder James Mays. One out later Hereaud tripled to right center and scored on a wild pitch.

Following a Derek Perren double that was again hit just beyond the reach of Mays and another wild pitch, Stantrel Smith's hard hit single off the glove of a diving Leivi Ventura at third base plated the game's final run.

The victory means the Roadrunners need to win just one of their remaining six games to clinch the North American Baseball League's United Division regular season title. They start a three game series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium against the WhiteWings Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
