Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Alexandria, LA - The Harlingen WhiteWings (9-16) scored four runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Alexandria Aces (12-12) 10-8 tonight at Bringhurst Field.

Down 10-4 entering the inning, David Fowler drew a one-out walk against Alejandro Martinez. Kevin Griffin was hit by a pitch and Ryan Fox walked to load the bases. Brian Nichols hit a grounder to second that could have been two, but the relay throw from second was thrown away, allowing Nichols to reach and two runs to score. Argelis Nunez followed with a two-run home run over the left-center field scoreboard to bring the WhiteWings within two, but Carl Johnson grounded out to end the game.

Fox hit his fourth home run of the season to lead off the second inning against Chad Linder (2-1) to give the WhiteWings an early 1-0 lead.

Palmer Karr Jr. responded with his fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the inning against Alex Gett (1-4) to tie the game.

The Aces took advantage of two errors in the third to score four runs (one earned) to take a 5-1 lead. Madison Edwards led off with a double and Jose Umbria followed with a single, moving Edwards to third. Albert Gonzalez then hit a grounder to second that could have been a double play, but Candelario Perez couldn't make the play and it was ruled an error fielder's choice, meaning Umbria would have been retired on the play. Edwards scored, Umbria went to third and Gonzalez was on at first. Gonzalez got caught stealing for the first out, and then Blake Butler walked. Selwyn Langaigne followed with an RBI-single and went to second on the throw. Patrick O'Sullivan then hit a sacrifice fly to score Butler and move Langaigne to third, from where he scored when Griffin's pickoff attempt went into left field.

The Aces struck again in the fourth when Bryan Sabatella led off with a walk, stole second, and score on a one-out double by Umbria to make it 6-1.

In the top of the seventh, Nichols led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Johnson reached on an infield single and Perez followed with an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 6-2. The WhiteWings loaded the bases, but David Fowler struck out as the tying run at the plate to end the threat.

That would be it for Linder, who went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none.

The Aces tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh as Langaigne hit a one-out double. With two outs, Derek Bennett entered to faced Karr, who promptly hit an RBI-double to make it 7-2.

The WhiteWings got two runs in the eighth when Griffin was hit by a Ronald Ramirez pitch to start things off and stole second. With one out, Nichols hit an infield single to move Griffin to third. Nunez followed wih an RBI-single, and one out later, Perez hit an RBI-single to make it 7-4.

The Aces blew it open in the eighth as they scored three runs (one earned) against Bennett while batting around. Edwards led off with a single.
